Maroon fills most of the flag, with a broad white band at the hoist edged by nine sharp points. It was adopted shortly before independence on 3 September 1971, slightly changing the color of an earlier flag. Its length is more than twice its height.

About the flag of Qatar
What it means: The nine points mark Qatar as the ninth emirate to sign a 1916 treaty with Britain. White stands for peace, and maroon recalls Qatar's history of making purple dye.
Did you know? The maroon color came about partly because local red dye faded to a darker shade in the hot desert sun.
