About these flags pages

These pages are made for geography lessons as much as for coloring time. Each flag is drawn at its official shape, so Switzerland's is square, Nepal's has its two pennants and Qatar's is long and narrow, and the colors used on the real flag are shown on every page so children can check their work.

For younger children (ages 4 to 6), start with flags made of simple stripes or blocks: France, Italy, Germany, Japan or Indonesia. Kids aged 7 and up can take on stars and crosses, like the United States, the United Kingdom, Brazil or Australia. Flags with a coat of arms or a detailed emblem in the middle (Mexico, Spain, Ecuador) suit older kids and adults, and colored pencils work better than crayons for the small parts.

A few classroom ideas: give each child a country to research and present with their colored flag, make a flag chain for an international day, or sort finished flags by continent on a wall map. The flags are grouped by continent below to make that easier.

The flag designs come from public-domain files on Wikimedia Commons; each flag page links to its source file.
