Tunisia's flag is red with a white disk in the centre. Inside the disk, a red crescent curves around a red star. A close forerunner was approved in 1831, and the design became the republic's flag on 1 June 1959. A 1999 law set its proportions.

About the flag of Tunisia
What it means: The crescent and star are symbols linked to the Ottoman Empire, which once ruled the region.
Did you know? Its ruler, Bey Hussein II, chose to make the flag after the Battle of Navarino in 1827, and its look has barely changed since.
